MyBnk Scotland is excited to introduce a new addition to our range of financial education programmes, with the launch of MyBnk’s youth homelessness prevention programme in Glasgow.
The Money House is a five-day course, designed to help young people who are in, or about to move into independent living, manage their money and maintain their tenancy. We teach the essentials for money management, including how to deal with debt, budgeting, banking, and earning. This is combined with practical housing information such as paying deposits, inventory checks and tenancy agreements.
Learning these life skills helps to prevent youth homelessness. One third of care leavers lose their first home and there were 14,447 homelessness applications across Scotland between April and September in 2021. In 2019-2020, 6244 were aged 18-24 years old. At MyBnk Scotland, we are working to prevent youth homelessness by engaging young people in difficult circumstances with financial education and providing them with the skills they need to keep their tenancies.
Expanding into Scotland
Our first mobile Money House sessions recently took place in Stirling, and we are now delighted to announce that The Money House programme has a fixed location in Glasgow on the very well-known and aptly named, “Hope Street.”
Our expert trainers use fun, exciting and interactive games, referencing current youth culture, to make the training and materials relevant and engaging. We work to ensure The Money House is a homely environment, that feels more like a flat than a classroom, and we have tablets to promote digital knowledge and skills, such as how to use comparison websites.
The Money House Scotland is funded by MyBnk and our supporters. There are no costs for a young person to come on our courses and they receive a qualification at the end of it, which helps with housing applications. The recent launch of the mobile version of The Money House has proven to be an enormous success, and we are so excited to be able to roll this programme out further and have a permanent space in Glasgow, to help more young people to live, thrive and survive.
